Olympics Close With China on Top, U.S. Wins, Rogge Endorsement
Aug. 24 (Bloomberg) -- The Beijing Games closed tonight with an endorsement from the top Olympics official, China on top of the gold-medal standings and wins for the U.S. men's basketball and volleyball teams on the final day.
``These were truly exceptional Games,'' said International Olympic Committee President Jacques Rogge in his address to the closing ceremony of the 17-day sports event at the Bird's Nest stadium.
Rogge passed the Olympic flag to London Mayor Boris Johnson as part of the symbolic handover to the 2012 host, ending China's seven-year buildup to its first Olympics as host.
France won the final event in Beijing to leave China as the leading gold-medal winner for the first time with 51. Only the U.S. or Soviet Union had won the most golds since Germany in 1936. The U.S. led the total medal table 110 to China's 100.
``We consider this one of our most successful performances in the Olympic Games ever,'' said U.S. Olympic Committee Chief Executive Officer Jim Scherr in a statement today.
Kobe Bryant and his National Basketball Association colleagues defeated Spain 117-108 after leading by just two points in the fourth quarter to reclaim the championship the U.S. lost four years ago in Athens.
`More Important'
``It is more important and more special than any championship that any of us will ever win,'' Bryant, a three- time NBA champion, told reporters.
The U.S. basketball team rallied after failing to win the gold in 2004 for the first time since NBA players were permitted in the Olympics in 1992. The U.S., which won its seven other games in Beijing by an average of 30.3 points, led by four points late in the final before winning a 13th title in 16 Olympic appearances. Argentina won the bronze.
The victory lifted the Americans to 36 gold medals in Beijing -- the same as in Athens. The 35th gold came from the men's indoor volleyball team, 15 days after their coach's father-in-law was murdered in Beijing.
Coach Hugh McCutcheon returned for the last five of eight wins as the U.S. sealed its first gold since back-to-back titles in 1984 and 1988 with a 20-25, 25-22, 25-21, 25-23 win over Brazil.
``It's been a very emotionally demanding couple of weeks,'' McCutcheon told reporters. ``After we won, I had to step outside and collect myself.''
Kenyan First
Samuel Kamau Wansiru took the men's marathon in a Games record time to become the first Kenyan to secure an Olympic title in the longest distance in track and field, a year after he suffered a bout of malaria.
Under clear blue skies and with temperatures rising into the mid-80s Fahrenheit (29 Celsius), the 5-foot-4 Wansiru broke clear of two-time world champion Jaouad Gharib in the last 10 kilometers (six miles) to enter the Bird's Nest alone.
``It feels good to make history,'' Wansiru told reporters after finishing in two hours, six minutes, 32 seconds.
China got two more gold medals today as Zou Shiming and Zhang Xiaoping became the country's first Olympic boxing champions.
Mongolia captured its first gold medal in boxing as Badar- Uugan Enkhbat took the bantamweight division title for his country's second gold of the Games -- and in Olympics history.
France beat Iceland 28-23 in the men's handball final and Hungary beat the U.S. 14-10 for a record-tying third straight men's water polo title.

Comedian Bernie Mac dies aged 50
Actor and comedian Bernie Mac has died at the age of 50.
The Emmy-nominated star was best known in the UK for film roles in Ocean's 13, Charlie's Angels and Transformers.
But he achieved critical and popular acclaim in the US for his sitcom The Bernie Mac Show, which earned him two Emmy award nominations.
He was admitted to hospital last week and died early on Saturday morning due to complications arising from pneumonia, his publicist said.
The comedian suffered from sarcoidosis, an inflammatory lung disease that produces tiny lumps of cells in the body's organs.
However, he said the condition went into remission in 2005.
Hi-tech thieves target Olympics
The start of the Olympics has proved irresistible to cyber criminals, say security firms.
The volume of junk e-mail messages with an Olympic theme spiked prior to the opening ceremony, said Symantec.
The malicious messages try to trick people into visiting fake sites or opening booby-trapped e-mail attachments, say other firms.
Some messages falsely claim users have won an Olympic lottery and encourage them to respond to claim their prize.
Hack attack
"The Beijing Olympics is gearing up to be one of the biggest events of the year and hackers and spammers will see it as a massive opportunity to compromise the unwary," said Con Mallom, a spokesman for Symantec.
Symantec said the messages in the spam it had seen related to the games ran the gamut of modern security threats.
"Members of the public have to remember that they should not open e-mails or click on links from unknown sources, no matter how many gold medals they are offering," said Mr Mallom.
Rik Ferguson of Trend Micro said the games could inspire attacks on sites related to the games in a bid to compromise them. The hijacked sites would then be used to attack visitors keen to catch up with the sporting event.We are fully anticipating malicious social engineering techniques to exploit people's interest in this event, luring unsuspecting users into clicking on compromised websites and into handing over sensitive personal information," he said.
Security firm Marshal said many of the malicious and junk messages emerging from the Rustock botnet were about the games.
A botnet is made up of a collection of home computers that have been hijacked by a gang of hi-tech criminals who then put it to a variety of ends. Some gangs simply vacuum up the personal data they find on compromised machines, others use the botnets to pump out spam or to attack other sites.
Phil Hay, lead threat analyst for Marshal, said e-mails sent out via Rustock to catch people out were getting more sophisticated. The latest batch appear to be about headline stories on CNN and many concern the Olympics.
Those clicking on the headlines get taken to a fake CNN video report and is asked to install a codec to watch the film. Those installing the codec become part of the Rustock botnet.
"As time has gone on, the criminals behind Rustock have adjusted the appearance and sophistication of their messages to become more convincing at fooling recipients into infecting themselves," said Mr Hay.Security company MessageLabs said it was not just members of the public that were at risk. The company said it had seen a campaign that used e-mails crafted to look like they had been written by the International Olympic Committee.
The messages have been sent to those who are part of national sporting organisations or help train athletes.
Travelling with the fake messages is a booby-trapped Adobe PDF that, if installed, steals data from a compromised PC.
The vast majority of the computer security threats taking advantage of the Olympics are aimed at users of Windows PCs.

PGMA invites Chinese electric firm to explore investment possibilities in RP power sector
BEIJING, People’s Republic of China -- President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has invited a leading Chinese electric company to visit the Philippines and propose ways to harness the country’s natural power resources.
The President made the invitation to officials of Dongfang Electric Corporation (DEC) who called on her Thursday in Chengdu City in Sichuan province, her first stop in her current trip to China.
Trade and Industry Secretary Peter Favila said the DEC officials who met with the President were led by Wang Ji, chairman of the power firm.
Favila said several other Chinese business leaders called on the President to discuss investment possibilities in the Philippines.
After the meetings with the Chinese businessmen, the President motored to the Sichuan town of Dujiangyan to distribute four truckloads of Oishi noodles donated by Philippine Special Envoy Carlos Chan to the May 12 earthquake victims.
Dujiangyan was among the areas hardest hit by the May 12 disaster. The quake victims have been resettled by the Sichuan in relocation sites.
The President and her 11-member delegation arrived in Beijing from Chengdu City last night.
DEC is a state-owned company specializing in “power equipment manufacturing and worldwide power projects contracting for thermal, hydro, nuclear, wind, gas turbine, combined-cycle power plant, and power distribution systems.”
President Arroyo noted that DEC’s electric power-sourcing expertise is “something we would like to see” and so she “invited them to come over (to the Philippines),” Favila said.
The DEC officials briefed the President on their projects, offering to build some for the Philippines, and so she said, “Come visit us in the Philippines, have a look,” Favila said.
The DEC has an annual power production capacity of more than 23,000 megawatts (mw). Its products range from 0.75 mw to 300 mw; 600 mw, and 1,000 unit capacity for thermal energy; plus up to 700 mw unit capacity in hydro; 1,000 mw for nuclear power; 2670 mw gas turbine; and 1.5 mw wind turbine.
Hundreds of DEC “products” are now being operated both domestically and overseas such as the United States, Canada, Malaysia, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Iran, Iraq, Indonesia, Albania, the former Yugoslavia, the Philippines and Peru.
The Philippine government has been looking for ways to reduce the country’s dependence on imported fuel oil by investing heavily on non-oil programs, including the largescale cultivation of jatropha.
The Arroyo administration has also stepped up efforts to harness hydro, wind, steam and solar power as sources of energy.

RP-China two-way trade volume hits $30 billion 2 years ahead of 2010 target
BEIJING, People’s Republic of China (PRC) – The two-way trade between the Philippines and China breached the $30-billion mark last year, a full two years ahead of the two countries’ 2010 projected trade target.
The Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said that based on figures provided by the General Administration of Customs China Philippine-China trade in 2007 amounted to $30.62 billion.
This represents a 30.8 percent increase over the 2006 figure of $23.4 billion, with the Philippines enjoying a trade surplus since 2001.
Philippine-China trade has been growing at an average rate of 41.39 percent since 2001, based on figures released by the Philippine National Statistics Office (NSO).
“In 2006, bilateral trade with China amounted to $8.2 billion, with RP exports amounting to $4.6 billion and imports amounting to $3.7 billion, giving RP a surplus of $945 million,” the NSO said.
Based on these figures, the NSO said that China is now the Philippines’ third largest trading partner, after the US and Japan.”
China’s General Administration of Customs, however, has come up with an even more impressive assessment of Philippine-China trade, saying that “China is already supposed to be the Philippines’ No. 1 trading partner.”
China’s customs office also reported that “trade imbalance in favor of RP is growing – RP exports to China amounted to S17.67 billion, while imports from China reached only $5.74 billion.”

China’s customs office also reported that “trade imbalance in favor of RP is growing – RP exports to China amounted to S17.67 billion, while imports from China reached only $5.74 billion.”
The trade figures were provided by China customs service as backgrounder to the four-day visit of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s four-day working visit to China to attend the opening of the Beijing Olympics, and the series of meetings she is holding with prospective Chinese investors in the Philippines.

The World's Billionaires
After 13 years on top, Bill Gates is no longer the richest man in the world. That honor now belongs to his friend and sometimes bridge partner Warren Buffett.
Riding the surging price of Berkshire Hathaway stock, Buffett has seen his fortune swell to an estimated $62 billion, up $10 billion from a year ago.
Gates is now worth $58 billion and is ranked third richest in the world. He is up $2 billion from a year ago, but would have been as rich--or richer--than Buffett, had Microsoft not made an unsolicited bid for Yahoo! at the beginning of February. Mexican telecom mogul Carlos Slim Helú now ranks as the world's second richest person with a net worth of $60 billion.

Cellphone Addiction
We tote our iPhones, LGs and BlackBerrys with us so we can contact anyone, anywhere, any time--and so we can be reached instantly. According to a recent Pew Internet & American Life Project survey, 51% of those polled said it would be very hard to give up their cellphones, up from 38% in 2002. The cellphone, in fact, was the most coveted technology in the survey, ahead of Internet access and television.
These aren't the frustrations of an isolated few, but of the mobile majority. Our phones have become such a big part of how we're able to function that it begs the question: Are we addicted to our cells?
Experts say constant use of mobile devices hasn't been diagnosed as an addiction--yet. But some contend that it's fast on its way to being classified as a disease similar to drug addiction, alcoholism or gambling.
The World's Priciest Burger: $185
London-Money can't buy you good taste but it can definitely buy you the most expensive
burger in the world. Named simply, The Burger, it is selling at 95 pounds ($185) at a Burger King in the exclusive district of South Kensington on Wednesday.
The limited edition of the burger, which can be bought for two days only and has so far sold 50, is challenging the current Guinness Record for the most expensive burger, currently held by the American Double Truffle Burger which cost just 65 pounds ($127) in 1994.
And the secret to its strong taste? "Its massaged Japanese Wagyu beef," Dowding said.
The burger, the size and looks of a regular whopper, is made out of ingredients from seven countries, from Japan to France.
Some restaurateurs dismissed the burger, spiced with organic white wine and pink Himalayan rock salt, as a "marketing stunt" comparing it with similar products launched by department sore like Selfridges and its 85 pound sandwich and Peter Jones's 50 pound cup of coffee pre-digested by a Civet cat.
But David Kisilevsky, vice president of marketing at the fast food restaurant, said "the burger is aimed at aficionados looking for the ultimate burger taste experience."
All proceeds from the sale of the burger will be donated to Help a London Child charity, which helps children experiencing abuse and poverty.
